2008 CNASA Volley Ball Tournament Guideline

Tournament Format
In this year¡¯s tournament, we will have A and B two divisions. There will be 5 teams in division A and 10 teams in division B.

Division A format:

  1. 5 teams will play round-robin to decide the winner.
  2. Each game will be decided by the best of three sets.
  3. Each set is 25 points, if the game is tied 1-1, a third set of 15 points will decide the winner of the game.
  4. For each set, if there is a 24-24 tie, a team must win 2 points to win the set.
  5. The teams rank will be decided by the following
    1. team¡¯s win-loss record
    2. if two team have the same record, the head-to-head record.
    3. If three or more teams have the same record, the record between those teams will be used (the record against other teams will be ignored). Teams with better record of this kind will rank higher. If that is the same too, the detailed score will be used (net sets and then net points). Last, a coin toss will be used to make the decision.

Teams in division A:

Sudbury

Penn United

SuperBad

BU PE Old

New Jersy Mix

Division B format:

  1. There will be two stages of competition. In first stage, 10 teams are splited into two pools.
  2. In each pool, we will adopt the method that has been used in Yankee Volley Ball League.
  3. In each pool¡¯s matches, teams will play round-robin. Each game will have two sets, each set will be decided by which team reaches 15 points first. When there is a 14-14 tie, a team must win 2 points to win the set.
  4. Each team will play 4 games and 8 sets in round-robin. The final ranking of each pool will be decided by the number of sets each team wins, not by the number of games.
  5. If more than one team has the same win/lose record of total sets, the tie-breaker will be:
    a. if two teams have same record, the head to head record will be used. If their game is a tie, the detailed score will be used to break tie. A coin toss will be used to decide the winner.
    b. if three or more teams have the same record, the record between those teams will be used (the record against other teams will be ignored). Teams with better record of this kind will rank higher. For further tie break, the same rule for two teams scenario will be used.
  6. Four teams in each pool will advance to the playoff, but the top two teams in each pool will play championship round to decide 1-4. The 3rd and 4th in each pool will play consolidation round to decide 5-8.
  7. Each playoff game will be decided in best of three sets (15 points each). If the third set is needed, it will be a short (11 points). Each set will be decided by at least 2 points.
    8. Top four teams will have trophies.

Pooling
In division B, because last year¡¯s champion Penn United and runner-up BU PE will play in division A, so Burlington Evergreen (third place last year) and Karma (fourth place last year) will be the top seeds in two pools.  Rest of the teams will be seeded into two pools based on CNASA drawing mechanism used last year.
